Okkervil River News

July 1, 2016

Last month on May 18, news outlets and blogs lit up with the news that Okkervil River would be releasing their next full length album, Away, on September 9.

Then last night, Okkervil River kicked off a four-and-a-half-month tour in support of Away. The extensive tour will land them in familiar haunts from their decade and a half touring history, as well as new landscapes. Last night they played the town - Austin, TX - that heard the first Okkervil River note ever back in 1998 and at the venue - Stubb's - where they are publicly known to have played their sixth public performance. And they will finish in Glasgow, which may be located in a newly independent country by the time the end of the tour rolls around. Their sound will bounce off the walls of the Neptune in Seattle again, a place where they are the first band to have walked across the venue's stage on opening night. They will play on a boat on the Seine for the third time. Brooklyn, NY will be treated at a relatively new venue to hearing Away played in full backed by an orchestra and an audience in Stockholm at the Bar Brooklyn may get something special "just because". At the Rolling Stone Weekender, the band will perform on the shores of the Baltic Sea for the first time. The coming months are sure to bring exciting memories for the band and audiences alike. If fans preserve any of these moments, please share recordings, pictures, stories or anything special to All 2016 tour dates are posted on the 2016 concerts page.

As the band embarks on a new point in their history with a different line-up, DTO is likewise recommencing activity, but likely in a revised form. More to come on both in another news post.

Dear Okkervil River fans, due to a work schedule that has taken me all over the globe for most of this decade, I've had to let Down the Oubliette slip into the dark, otherwise ignored outlier sections of internet. Tonight I am blowing dust off this site and tapping into the recess of my memory to recall how to even post here again.

I don't know if there are any readers out there any longer, but if there are, I wanted to draw your attention to the fact that tickets go on pre-sale tomorrow for a special Okkervil River show at the Bowery Ballroom on November 21 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Black Sheep Boy . A few dates are popping up at other venues, so it looks like this will be a nationwide tour (however extensive is unknown). I can attest the Bowery is a very special venue and they have not played there since 2006. So even you do not live in the NYC area, you may consider attending what surely will be a special night.

Pre-sale information for American Express holders can be found here.

November 18, 2011

Okkervil River is now in Europe wrapping up the final tour of 2011. If you are in the States, you'll have one last chance to catch Will in two weeks. He will be opening for Sondre Lerche, along with Bird of Youth, at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on Friday, December 2. Tickets are on sale now.

There are no announcements yet on the band's plans for 2012. We'll post news as it becomes available. In the meantime, we recommend you check out original material from band member Justin Sherburn. When not engaged with Okkervil River, Justin stays busy composing his own music. His website is currently offering free downloads of scores he wrote and recorded for theater productions: North Country Soundtrack, Music for Puppets and The Red Balloon Soundtrack. Lauren and Michael play on the North Country Soundtrack and Music for Puppets recordings. Travis, Scott and Patrick also contribute to Music for Puppets.

November 4, 2011

Pitchfork is streaming all four Fun Fun Fun Fest stages this weekend. Okkervil River will be on the Orange Stage tonight at 6:30 CDT.

July 21, 2011

The fall U.S. tour continues to widen its geographic scope. Okkervil River's itinerary now includes a stop in Pensacola, FL on September 15. After this tour concludes, it looks like Australia will be the next continent to host the band. The Melbourne Festival has slotted Okkervil River to play the Forum Theatre on October 14 and Will to play a solo show at the Toff in Town on October 16. Meeniyan Town Hall lists the band playing there on October 15. No other Australian dates have been unearthed...yet.

In case you missed it: NPR broadcasted an interview with Will and Patrick on World Cafe last week.

July 11, 2011

Win a chance to see Okkervil for free on September 10 at the Virgin Mobile FreeFest, which is held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, by "liking" the festival's Facebook page (along with the other over 90K who have already liked the page).

July 7, 2011

Perhaps, not a "full" schedule, but we only had to wait one day for additional tour dates to be confirmed. Gigs in Spain, Sweden, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Kansas and New York were added.

July 6, 2011

Several more tour dates were announced yesterday. Okkervil River has been added to the SoundTown Festival in Somerset, WI in August and Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin in November and will be making stops in Richmond, Dallas and Chicago in September. Hopefully full tour schedules will be available soon.

June 29, 2011

Score one for DTO! Certainly, the site will rival for fansite of the year after being MIA for 50 days after an album dropped. We'll try to do a better job at being more current from here on out.

Since the last post, Okkervil River completed a European and a U.S. tour and is now gearing up for the festival season. So far, we've gathered that they will be playing 8 festivals across the U.S. and Europe: 80/35 (Iowa), Oyafestivalen (Norway), Haldern Festival (Germany), La Route Du Rock Festival (France), End Of The Road Festival (UK), Truck America Festival (New York), Midpoint Music Festival (Ohio), and Nor'Easter Festival (Vermont). The band will also open for the Decemberists on the West Coast at the end of August. Dates are listed on the DTO Concerts page.

In album news, I Am Very Far charted at #31 on The Billboard 200 for the week of May 14, 2011 and entered the U.K. Charts at #66. This was the first time Okkervil River cracked the Top 40 in the U.S. and the first time they registered on the U.K. Charts.

In addition to the cross country/continent jaunts, the band has also been busy with appearances on various television and radio broadcasts to promote the album. Listen to in-studio performances and interviews on Minnesota Public Radio and WNYC Soundcheck and an eight-song concert on NPR's World Cafe Live. Watch their performance of "Rider" on Late Show with David Letterman, "We Need A Myth" from the First Listen Live NPR/KUT show at the Cactus Cafe and a short acoustic set on MTV Hive.

Will is certainly busy while on tour. In addition to the concerts themselves, he always seems to be popping up elsewhere, usually on his own. Here are videos of "Lost Coastlines" and "Pop Lie," which he performed for Le Cargo before Okkervil's show in Paris last fall.

January 6, 2009

During their U.S. tour this past fall, Okkervil stopped to chat with Pitchfork contributor Jessica Suarez. Part one of the two part interview has now been posted on What's a little narrative license when you get to hear the genuine enthusiasm of playing with the legendary Roky Erickson?

December 22, 2008

Two thousand eight was a year in which Okkervil River advocated for social change through the support and promotion of several charity and green projects. To conclude 2008, Will Sheff adds one more cause to these efforts. This time he lends his voice to raise public awareness of a population that is becoming increasingly marginalized as a result of the current financial crisis. Learn more about this campaign on episode 5 of BEARDO broadcasting now on Pitchfork TV.

It took DTO a couple of days to get around to mentioning that OKKERVIL RIVER WILL BE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN; we were out celebrating. Watch them stampede Dave's stage on January 7, 2009.

In preparation for the CBS appearance, the sixsome will play a show for the NYC and surrounding area fans at The Bell House on January 6, 2009. BUY tickets before this small venue sells out.

This may no longer qualify as news, but a year ago Daytrotter had Will in to do a reading for the Bookery section of their website. You can now hear him read "Okkervil River" from Tatyana Tolstaya's White Walls.

November 25, 2008

We've been out and about, away from the computer, of late but we're back now; at least one half of us is. Here's some of what has been going on with Okkervil this past week or two.

Will was on Bayern 2 radio in Munich on November 18. Part of the interview can be heard on line.

The Fall 2008 issue of Under The Radar has an interview with Will (as well as an album review).

November 6, 2008

The Austin Chronicle informs us that Okkervil River will be recording an album of unreleased Roky Erickson songs. No release date even hinted at yet. The boys backing Roky at the Austin Music Awards this year was stupendous so we can't wait to hear what they do with these songs.

November 5, 2008

Turns out the Will Sheff/Charles Bissell collaboration isn't an urban legend after all. November 1, 2008

Okkervil River's Fall 2008 US tour concluded almost three weeks ago--a tour that was extraordinary in its ambition to be completely carbon neutral, and yet DTO inexcusably failed to mention it up to this point.

The band sought to accomplish their goal by selling carbon-offset stickers at the shows and by encouraging their fans to commute to the venues by way of carpools, public transportation and bike rides. Through these initiatives, the band strove to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of CO2 emissions to the environment and to promote eco-friendly transportation options not only for travel to concerts, but for everyday life.

Bike rides were organized through local alternative transportation advocacy groups in Madison, Portland, Tempe, Athens, Pittsburgh and Chicago, and the carpools through the eco-rideshare program PickupPal. If you are organizing an event in the future, keep PickupPal in mind.

The carbon-offset stickers, designed by Scott Brackett, sold for two dollars at every stop on the tour. Each sticker purchased offset 300 lbs. of carbon emissions. The gross proceeds of the sales went to NativeEnergy, a non-profit organization that supports clean and renewable energy projects and promotes the sustainability of Native American farming. To increase the sticker sales at the last ten shows, the band raffled off a copy of an unreleased song, a unique version of which was mixed in the "green" room prior to the start of each show.

According to the band's website, their green efforts were enabled in part by Air Traffic Control, a non-profit organization that provides artists with the resources to engage in social change.

If you were unable to go to the shows, and wish to contribute to causes supported by Okkervil River, you can purchase carbon-offsets (stickers not included) through NativeEnergy's website or make an online donation to Air Traffic Control.

Visit their official website for links to points of ticket sales and venue websites (and as an added bonus--there is even a link to a fruit restaurant!).

There’s a two-page article in the November 2008 issue of Uncut (Bob Dylan cover) wherein the author sits down in Brooklyn with a very happy Will Sheff thanks, in part, to Lou Reed. The article is not on-line, but the magazine is worth the money. It also contains a 4-star review of The Stand Ins.

This week's episode of NPR's All Songs Considered features Will Sheff. In his role as guest DJ, Will not only pulls songs from obscurity to share with the listeners, he also discusses a range of topics with Bob Boilen, the host of All Songs Considered. In speaking of one of his earliest musical influeneces, The Incredible String Band, Will states: "I really didn't know that music could be like this...This idea that music could be like casting a spell and could reorder the entire world." (I think many feel that notion could be applied to a band whose name appears a few times on this website.)

The "Lost Coastlines" video is now up on YouTube.

September 25, 2008

It appears that the Subterranean blog is a little confused with the hours of the day. Today's blog (9/25) instructs all to tune in at "1AM tonight." In that case, for the official record, "Lost Coastlines" will be introduced to the MTV2 viewing world at 1 a.m. EDT on Friday, September 26 (not on September 25, as was announced yesterday). Yes, MTV2! If you miss it, switch over to mtvU at the top of every hour for the duration of the day.

September 24, 2008

Will Sheff, Travis Nelsen and Patrick Pestorius have descended upon Park Slope in Brooklyn to help record the debut album from Bird of Youth, a new musical project led by Beth Wawerna. The record is being produced by no other than Mr. Sheff himself (release date unknown). Scott Brackett is also listed as a band member on Bird of Youth's MySpace page. See Beth in action covering "Pop Lie"--the latest addition to Okkervil River's The Stand Ins covers project.

We previously wrote that Okkervil had asked their friends to cover songs from their forthcoming album, which they have been uploading to their YouTube channel. Well, don't feel left out because they've also invited fans to record their own versions of The Stand Ins songs. Feel free to upload one yourself or join in on this interesting idea: Chad at Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands has seized the challenge issued by Okkervil River and has come up with a communal plan for fans to participate. Visit the blog to learn how you can contribute.

Don't forget to pre-order your copy of The Stand Ins. Take your choice between ordering from Jagjaguwar to receive posters of this album, as well as The Stage Names, or from Newbury Comics for an autographed copy of the CD booklet. Or, if you're the indecisive type, buy one from each.

We have no other information, but they did not play this event.

August 18, 2008

In part 1 of an interview given backstage at Schubas, Will talks of the unnerving Belgian audiences and feeling like Bon Jovi. We'll be sure and let you know when part 2 is posted.

Also, Okkervil River has set up a YouTube channel where they have begun posting "stand in" videos for The Stand Ins. They kicked off the project last week with the album's promotional video. In one of two videos released today, "The Stand Ins Intro," Will explains the concept of this endeavor: Each song on The Stand Ins now has a sibling video performed by a different artist that the band has befriended over the last ten years. Carl Newman of The New Pornographers serves as the first stand in by dueting with Will on "Lost Coastlines." Videos of the recreations will be released in the order that they appear on the album. Since Will encouraged the artists to tear apart the songs, it should be interesting to see what is to come.

August 12, 2008
